I should have let her win. She was so close, but damn, I really want another date. I weighed my options and figured the long game of another evening together won out over a kiss. I just can’t let her go without trying. I want to spend as much time as I can with her, friend or not.

Looking back, I find her eyes on me. We stare at each other for a beat before she looks elsewhere, and I continue to look at her, noting the way her ponytail is mussed and her hair flies all around her face, framing it in a wild windswept look from go-karts and putt-putt. Every time her baby blues land on me, I want to grab her and never let her go.

What is going on in that head of hers? How could she not feel what I feel? It’s not just the way she looks, though anyone with eyes can see she’s attractive. The way she wears those shorts tonight, I might have stared extra-long during putt-putt and filed the images away in my brain, but it’s her—all of her. It’s the way she belly-laughs when she thinks something’s funny, the way she nervously scratches behind her ear when she doesn’t know what to say, how her left eye twitches when she’s trying not to smile. I want to stare at her all the time, don’t want anything to escape my attention. I feel like a lovesick puppy. I wouldn’t call it love, not yet anyway. It’s too early for that, but this is definitely more than lust.

With two chocolate-dipped ice creams and drinks in hand, I make my way back to the table and sit across from Hanna.

“Tell me three interesting facts about yourself,” she says as she grabs one of the ice creams from my hand.

I watch as she opens her mouth to take a long lick up the chocolate outside and silently curse myself for getting it for her. It will be torture to sit and watch, pretending I’m not affected. At least we’re sitting down so when I inevitably get a raging hard-on, she won’t be able to see how turned on I am—or maybe she knows exactly what she’s doing. She has been looking at me this entire time. I continue to watch her eat the dessert, just holding my melting cone like an idiot.

It has been a while, I think to console myself over my teenage behavior and thoughts.

“Well?” she prompts, leaning in.

“Oh, yeah.” I clear my throat. “Three things. Well, one, I like to cook.”

“Doesn’t count. I already know that about you.” She sits back in her chair and crosses her legs, and my gaze drifts over her shorts and down the tanned length of her.

Fuck, I really need to get it together.

“Okay, I have broken five different bones.”

“Five? What were you, a mini daredevil as a child?”

“I think five is a low number.”

“You are crazy.” She smiles and spins her hand in the air. “Go on.”

“I did a womanless beauty pageant in college and won.
